Crail Balcomie---Crail, Scotland
(FYI, this course is regarded so highly by me because I "felt" something there. Something magical. If you don't feel golf is
magical, you might not like Balcomie as much as I did.)
Through the kind invitation of a fellow golf enthusiast, I was introduced to Crail. In fact, there are two golf courses
at Crail. One is the old school Tom Morris course, Balcomie, and the other the new school, Gil Hanse design,
Craighead. Of the two, I was fortunate enough to play Balcomie.
In fact, I knew very little of Crail before this invitation. So, playing it was a treat but not something I yearned for.
Boy, what an ignorant idiot I was before this round of golf. And I am sure I am not the only person unaware of
Crail’s great golf courses.
The club has the history; Old Tom Morris association, 7th oldest golfing society in the world, and the new course
was designed by one of the young hot shots. And it has the golf as well. WOW!!! I was quite simply blown away.
It was a great routing that takes advantage of the courses #1 asset, the wind. It was the beauty the stands right
up next to some of the most scenic courses is the world.
And it has the golfing interest, despite its lack of length, to hold the interest of almost any golfer.
The 5th hole, Hells Hole, just might be the most difficult, as this 447 yard par 4 cuts across the sea to an angled
fairway and green complex. Trust me on this one, the forced carry over the water in a 30 MPH wind is not easy!!
The routing takes advantage of some cool double green complexes and then after hole 14 takes you over to
another portion of the course. And on the next section the beauty ramps up another notch.
And tee shots are nothing less than stunning.
But don’t get caught up looking at the scenery, you better have your game locked and loaded or you will feel the
