Pacific Dunes is, essentially, the course that put Tom Doak on the map. It is, to date, his most highly acclaimed golf
course design. Mr. Keiser hired Tom Doak to build Pacific Dunes, the 2nd course at the Bandon Dunes Golf
Resort, which opened in 2001.
Pacific Dunes opens with a bit of a tight and claustrophobic feeling with its first two holes. The fairways are lined
with trees and gorse and many hills and hummocks block the view to the green.
But then the course opens up with the par 5 3rd hole and continues to open with the stunningly beautiful
Oceanside 4th hole.
The course gets short and tight again until Mr. Doak shifts the course into overdrive on the back nine, which is one
of the very best nine hole stretches in all of golf. In a word, it is spectacular.
The 11th is an All-World par 3 in terms of beauty and playability.
The 13th is a hole you will never forget playing with interesting choices off the tee, gargantuan bunkers on the
approach, and a wind exposed green overlooking the sea.
The remainder of the back nine is excellent as well, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the incredible par 3 17th
hole. Beautiful and incredibly strategic…and as we all know, that is a tough combination for a par 3.
The course winds down with a wonderful par 5 and one of the best greens and bunker complexes on the course.
