Wannamoisett Country Club---Rumford, RI
-Rankings as of 1/30/2015--32nd best U.S. Classic Course (Golfweek)
I was drawn to play Wannamoisett for a few reasons. First off, it shows up on my Controversial Course list as only Golfweek ranks it as one of the best courses in the United States. Given my interest in seeing these courses that cause such division among the rating intelligentsia, combined with my respect for Golfweek's taste, I had to make the journey.
Additionally, the golf course architecture lovers of the world rave about the routing work that Donald Ross did at Wannamoisett. You see, all he had was a small piece of property to work with for this course. And the general feeling is that he got every ounce of golfing pleasure out of the property with his ingenious routing.
To put it bluntly, I would whole-heartedly agree that the routing at Wannamoisett is world-class. The property might be small, but the twists and turns of the course maximize the use of the wind. Elevation changes come into play.
And green sites are varied and very interesting.
Wannamoisett is a course that all lovers of golf course architecture should go and see.
